NASCAR sucks

I tend to be writing alot about things that suck.

Oh well. Nascar (and car racing in general) is a waste of everything ever created. I quote Homer Simpson's argument for watching racing: "This is our chance to see cars driving!". Indeed! Can't see that anywhere else!

Now certainly racing driving takes a certain amount of skill, no question about it. Both mental and physical skill.

But come on. Watching cars drive. You can get the same effect by videotaping a road, then watching it on fast forward. Then just add your own hick-ish commentary:

"Look at how he's turning those corners!"
"Well yes Jim, I done spoken to him today and he been practicing turning like a hog practices rollin' in mud."
"And that acceleration out of the turn number 2 was flawless"
"He also said that he be dog gone good at hittin' his foot on that there gasoline pedal"

There's not much like turning to a channel (FOX!) to watch a favorite show and instead seeing cars going in circles. Yeah baby!

  • I don't understand Nascar either. i can understand doing it - but a spectator sport? It's confusing.

I think there is a lot more going on in NASCAR than most people know. I do know some NASCAR fans and my dad will occasionally watch a race.

I think the casual fan basically just hopes for a crash. Others can rattle off the specs for every driver and their car.

I don't know much about NASCAR or other car racing. I do know that it isn't just about whoever drives the fastest. There is a lot more strategy involved for one thing (something I never knew until I asked a fan).

I don't car to spend the time to know everything about the sport so I don't understand it. Really I feel the same way about most sports. They seem fun to play but why watch them?

Baseball commentary is not exactly intellectual either - neither is the game. Why is watching grown men hit a white ball and then run in circles more exciting? Because they take turns running in circles? I realize that I'm oversimplifying the game of baseball but no more so then you are NASCAR (and car racing in general).

Your "hick-ish" commentary was insulting and demeaning towards a whole lot of people you have never met. I think it's one thing to admit that you don't understand the appeal of a sport - but why lower yourself to attacking those who do?

An interesting and less offensive post about this topic can be found at http://www.thetalentshow.org/archives/001668.html

  • I don't agree that if you oversimplified baseball and nascar the same amount that you'd get equally stupid-sounding things.

I know my commentary was insulting. And come on, I'm sure somewhere someone is talking like that. Not everyone certainly. I just think it's funny.

Are you upset by Cletus and Brandene on the Simpsons?

  • No - I am not upset by them because they are obvious caricatures. What bothered me was that you seemed to not understand that not all people who do like NASCAR are actually like that. I don't have a problem with the existence of these characters but I have a problem with the fact that some people see them as ACTUAL examples. It just smacks of elitist classism bullshit.

I think that I showed that baseball simplified is just as dumb. Apparently, you chose to ignore that. Maybe to you guys running around in tight pants and hitting things with sticks doesn't sound ridiculous? I do know several people who assume that ALL sports fans are idiots. I disagree with them.

I would like to add that I don't think you meant to be hateful towards anyone - but I felt I needed to make a comment. In college I got really irritated with people's tired-ass jokes about the South. If you haven't lived in the South then you really don't have the right to sit in judgment.
